Nurturing religious and cultural tolerance is the goal of this fully bilingual interactive educational resource, developed by DRAY Media for the Department of Education, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, for release in late 2010.
Nine original characters were developed from the diverse regions of Newfoundland and Labrador, each with a different belief background and cultural profile. This dynamic quality allows for the platform's broad and intrinsically inclusive nature.
Each character is featured in their own chapter, highlighting sacred and special places, symbols and beliefs that relate to their faith and culture. Graphics, text, streaming audio and video components illuminate diversity while instilling values of acceptance and understanding.
Over 100 illustrations were developed to illuminate audio and text components. Each chapter is supplemented by the Cultural Connections feature, a real-life video segment meant to extend the impact of the illustrative concepts into real understanding.
Each character offers insight into their individual faith and belief system by means of illustration coupled with synchronized on-screen text / audio. The platform mirrors a show and tell presentation that fosters discovery, curiosity and inspiration.
To complement the interactive DVD, a teacher's guide and a series of interpretive posters were developed. As a package, this platform is considered unique, not only in its scope and breadth, but in the depth, flavour and impact of its lush interactive experience.
DRAY Media had an interesting task set before it when we set out to create an interactive learning tool for teaching children about religion. What on the surface may seem like a fun and simple project, was in actuality quite daunting. Faced with the challenge of creating a cast of culturally and spiritually diverse characters and depicting sacred and religious artefacts and iconography, we hit the books and started doing our research.
Every element of the CD not only had to be respectful of the source material, but also fun, engaging and most of all educational. Though it was a lot of work, it was a labour of love. From creating the art style to designing the interface to recording the voices, DRAY Media's team poured themselves into making this project something we could be proud of.
